Judge Faults Diet Product: An administrative law judge ruled that the distributor of a weight-loss product, Fibre Trim, failed to adequately substantiate that it was effective. Federal Trade Commission Judge Lewis F. Parker also said that Schering-Plough, the Madison, N.J., pharmaceutical company that sold the product, did not adequately prove its claims that Fibre Trim provides the health benefits of a fiber-rich diet. The FTC said the case was “another example of the high level of substantiation” the agency requires for health claims made by distributors of food products and supplements. The judge ordered the company to stop making the claims about the quality of fiber or other nutrients in Fibre Trim or any of its other products.
