Banning Gangs From Public Park

Share

I share the frustration members of the San Fernando City Council feel at not being able to use their parks. I can’t go to my neighborhood park, either. Even as I write, a police helicopter circles overhead. But putting parks off-limits to gang members reflects a visceral desire to strike back, not an informed and constitutional approach to an increasingly serious problem.

The law passed by the council is an infringement on First Amendment rights. It has the potential to open the door to future laws regulating where law-abiding people can meet, move and perhaps travel. And what is the next step if the new ordinance is unsuccessful?

Strong measures, including more police, are needed. But we must not disregard our Constitution so as to protect ourselves from those who cherish it least.
