Question: Will my credit card protect me if a tour company or hotel goes bankrupt?
Answer: Not always. Passengers are not automatically entitled to their money back, according to the law. However, credit card companies may take these charges off consumer bills to maintain goodwill.
Q: Although there will be many Christopher Columbus celebrations next year, only one has the real Columbus. Where is he buried and what is planned at the site?
A: While many countries still claim Columbus’ remains, the Dominican Republic insists his ashes repose at its Columbus Memorial Lighthouse and will stage a variety of events marking the 500th anniversary of his discovery of America.
Q: Do car rental companies give bonuses to frequent users as do airlines and hotels?
A: Car rental firms indeed have discount and bonus programs that are available to both leisure and business people who join their company promotional clubs.
Q: Now that North and South Korea are trying to resolve their differences, can Americans visit North Korea?
A: The U.S. Department of State does not prohibit such visits, but at the same time doesn’t allow American tour firms, ships or airlines to travel to that country.
Q: Are Soviet cruise lines still operating, and will they sail to the United States and Caribbean?
A: Although plans and schedules are uncertain, the Soviet cruise fleet isn’t moth-balled. The Columbus Caravelle, a new 330-passenger liner, will serve Latin America and the antarctic this winter. For details, call a travel agent or the International Cruise Center at (800) 221-3254.
Q: We’re interested in a trip to study plants and wildlife in various parts of the world. Are there tour firms specifically licensed to operate such tours?
A: Various groups such as the Audubon Society and Smithsonian Institution sponsor such ecology trips and maintain strict standards of behavior for both operator and tour members.
Q: Is there any organization that collects old subway trains?
A: The New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn has established a historic subway station containing 18 restored cars, a functioning signal tower, antique turnstiles, system maps and other archives.
Q: I’m confused by the many cruise folders at my travel agency. Is there an individual or organization that rates the different ships?
A: Your local bookstore should have guides that describe amenities offered by various liners. Among the best are “The Berlitz Complete Handbook to Cruising,” by Douglas Ward, which rates 150 ships; Frommer’s “Dollarwise Cruises,” and Fielding’s “Worldwide Cruises.”
Q: Is there an Amtrak luxury train to Florida along the East Coast?
A: Amtrak provides compartment and dining services on the Florida run. American European Express has plans for a more luxurious service from New York City to Miami and Key Largo by limousine.
