For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen on what to do in the garden this week:

Plant snapdragons for cool weather flowers.

Chrysanthemums can give the fall garden that cherished spark of color when it’s needed most. When planting, make sure it’s a sunny location.

Get rhododendrons and azaleas ready for winter by mulching heavily around their base. Two to three inches of organic compost should do it.

If you haven’t already, prune blackberry vines, clean under your fruit trees, pick off dead flower heads and generally clean up your garden this month.

Take care of roses this month. Remove dead wood, twiggy growth, damaged leaves or stems. You should bag the debris and take it to the dump.
