Troops in Europe

Share

The primary reason for keeping so many American troops in Europe was the lack of territorial depth to fight a holding action while we send troops from the U.S. Now the Soviets are withdrawing at least 500 miles and tripling Europe’s strategic depth. Why can’t we withdraw substantial numbers of troops, leaving equipment in case they have to return, and save a great part of the $100 billion we spend annually on Europe’s defense?

Liberty and a stable peace are our first priorities, but they are both made possible only by our domestic strength. Perhaps the money saved should be spent on better weapons systems and troop training, perhaps on domestic programs or deficit reduction, but certainly it can be allocated more productively and it should be allocated here.
