In Lu Haas’ letter (“Logging Controversy,” Oct. 22), it was correctly noted that “only God can make a tree” (Joyce Kilmer), but no mention was made that he started the process millions of years ago. Nowadays the forestry industry plants over 2 billion trees per year to help him in providing the human race with the most environmentally advantageous materials on Earth. In the U.S. the rules for harvesting these materials are the strictest in the world, in regard to the total environment and its creatures, including man.
