A drifter who claims that he killed more than 70 people during a 10-year cross-country spree has been moved from a county jail to what authorities call the nation’s most secure prison.

Donald Leroy Evans, 35, was moved Monday from Harrison County Jail to Marion Federal Penitentiary in Illinois.

“Federal authorities are doing what is in the best interest of the people, by providing the maximum security for such a dangerous criminal,” Dist. Atty. Cono Caranna said.

Evans will return to the Gulf Coast in March, when he will be tried for the rape and murder of 10-year-old Beatrice Louise Routh.
