Tougher Corporate Sentences Ahead: Businesses convicted of federal crimes face the prospect of bigger fines under guidelines for judges to sentence corporations, unions and other organizations that take effect today. The guidelines issued last spring by the U.S. Sentencing Commission raise the prospect that corporations convicted of widespread fraud could be fined hundreds of millions of dollars. The new sentencing rules apply to crimes committed after today. They require federal judges to calculate fines by taking into account the amount of a fraud, the involvement of company officials and the financial loss to victims.
