Gays Protest Governor's Veto

Wilson's repeated use of the word fascist (Oct. 27) to describe the tactics of gay rights demonstrators is offensive and, more importantly, incorrect. Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary defines fascism as "a system of government characterized by forcible suppression of the opposition; especially leftist, minority groups, etc."

By definition, gays and lesbians, as an unempowered minority, would more likely be the target of "fascist tactics" than the perpetrators of such actions.

Wilson should exercise more care before employing such inflammatory, specious language. Vocal, nonviolent protest by any minority group is inherently anti-fascist. Indeed, it is profoundly American.
