General Motors Corp. named Harvey B. Williams the new manager of its Van Nuys assembly plant, succeeding Barry E. Herr, who returned to Oklahoma City as manager of GM’s assembly plant there.

GM also said Joe C. Ponce was appointed quality director of the Van Nuys plant. Ponce had been the plant’s production superintendent since 1985.

The Van Nuys plant, currently GM’s sole source for its Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird sports cars, is scheduled to close next summer because GM is transferring the cars’ production to Canada. About 2,600 workers are employed at the Van Nuys plant.

Herr had been manager of the Van Nuys plant since September, 1989. Before that, he was production manager at the Oklahoma City facility.
