County OKs Purchase of Sheriff’s Quarters

The county Board of Supervisors has approved the $6-million purchase of a Kearny Mesa building to be used as headquarters for the Sheriff’s Department.

Acting without debate, the board approved the purchase Tuesday, a decision that will allow Sheriff Jim Roache to relocate about 190 central administration and management personnel from offices in the crowded downtown jail.

The total cost of the Ridgehaven Court facility, owned by General Dynamics, will reach $6.8 million when communications systems, a debt reserve and other costs are factored in. But county officials say that they are getting a good deal on the vacant building, which has been appraised at $8 million.

The county would borrow most of the money, but its Solid Waste Division, which will house workers in the new facility for three years, would contribute $700,000 and the sheriff’s drug asset forfeiture fund would add $500,000 up front.

Roache has said that he hopes to occupy the new building by early next year.
