Police issued a warning Thursday against drinking a banned but popular alcoholic medicine that has reportedly killed 105 people in the last two days.

United News of India said the people died after drinking the brew Tuesday during Diwali, the Hindu “Festival of Lights” celebrated throughout India. Poor people often drink it as a cheap substitute for whiskey.

Fresh cases continued to be reported throughout the city and the death toll is likely to increase, the news agency said.
