Magic Johnson Confronts AIDS

Share

I deeply admire Magic Johnson’s courage in coming forward with the revelation that he has tested HIV-positive. I am, however, angry that it has taken someone of his stature to wake up the mainstream population that HIV does not discriminate--anyone can be at risk.

I have worked on the Southern California AIDS Hotline for over two years and cannot begin to list the number of calls I have taken from those both HIV-positive and those with full-blown AIDS who have lost their jobs, their friends and even the love and support of their families simply because they have a virus. I have spoken to people who are homeless and dying on the street because they cannot get medication or food.

I only hope that now there may be a better understanding of the epidemic and people will be able to look into their hearts and convey support for those infected who are not celebrities but ordinary people who deserve respect and compassion.
