FLICKS FILM AND VIDEO FILE : Cinema Snippets : Alien powers, poverty, American Indian culture and journeys are all topics hitting the screen in the coming week.

Saturday’s installment of the Thousand Oaks Library Classic Cinema series is the 1986 Argentine film “Man Facing Southeast” by director Eliseo Subiela. The story, set in a mental institution, centers on a psychiatrist and his new patient, a man who claims to be a visitor from another planet. The psychiatrist wavers between belief and disbelief while the patient displays some unusual powers. The movie will begin at 7 p.m. The library is located at 1401 E. Janss Road. On Sunday the Ojai Film Society will show “Straight Out of Brooklyn,” the feature film debut by writer-director Matty Rich. (Rich also appears in the film.) The movie is about an African-American family’s sad existence in Brooklyn and the son’s dream of stealing enough money to move everyone to a better life in Manhattan. Show time at the Ojai Playhouse is 4:30 p.m. The Playhouse is located at 145 E. Ojai Ave.

Traditional American Indian tales are more than just simple stories. They tell plenty about the culture from which they came. The movie “North American Indian Legends,” to be shown Wednesday night as part of the Ray D. Prueter Library Family Film Night, illustrates some of these tales. The double feature will also include “Annie and the Old One,” a film based on the 1972 Newbery Honor Book award winner. In the film a dying Navajo grandmother helps her granddaughter deal with her approaching death. The first film is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The library is located at 510 Park Ave. in Port Hueneme. Filmmaker Frank Klicar will show and narrate his film “Yugoslavia” tonight at the Ventura College Theater. This latest in the college’s travel film series will cover the history of the country as well as its religion and politics. Klicar visited the medieval city Dubrovnik, the monasteries of Macedonia, Korcula (the home of Marco Polo), the mosques of Sarajevo, the shrine of Medjugorje and Zagreb, the Croatian capital.

The film will be shown twice, at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $3.50 (general) and $3 (senior citizens) for the early show and $4 (general) and $3.50 (senior citizens) for the late show. Ventura College is located at 4667 Telegraph Road. For more information call 654-6459.

While we’re on the subject of vicarious journeys, on Sunday the Oxnard Civic Auditorium will present “Portraits of the Great Far East” by Doug Jones. The film is made up of clips Jones compiled from his nine trips to the Far East. He has included scenes from Japan, Korea, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Sri Lanka and India. Showtime is 2:30 p.m. Admission is $6.50. The auditorium is located at 800 Hobson Way. For more information call 486-2424.

So there you have it--Yugoslavia and the Far East for just $10.50 maximum. Just remember to remain seated during takeoff and landing.
