Two Big Bear Ski Resorts to Open as Temperatures and Snow Fall

Share

Two Big Bear ski areas--Bear Mountain and Snow Summit--will open today. Thursday’s storm dropped about three inches, and cold temperatures have enabled both areas to make more snow.

Bear Mountain, which first opened Nov. 1 but closed a week later because of warm weather, will run its Big Bear Express to serve the 1 1/4-mile-long Claim Jumper run. Snow Summit, which will not have its rental shop open this weekend, will operate Chairlift No. 10 to serve its Miracle Mile run, plus No. 8.

Mammoth Mountain has restored its base to 24-48 inches through snow making and six inches of powder that fell Thursday.

Alpine Meadows and Boreal are the only other Sierra resorts open, since Squaw Valley and Kirkwood closed temporarily.

Sun Valley will begin its season today, earliest start in the Idaho resort’s history. In Utah, Park City remains open. Heavy snowfall in Colorado has enabled Breckenridge, Copper Mountain and Monarch to join Aspen, Keystone, Loveland and Vail in operation.
