A fragile peace descended on war-torn El Salvador on Saturday.

A unilateral rebel cease-fire took effect at midnight Friday and held through its first tense hours despite continuing military operations in guerrilla-dominated areas.

For the first time in many days, the army reported no casualties from fighting Saturday. Two rebels and a soldier were wounded in light clashes Friday.

The cease-fire was announced Thursday by the leftist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front at U.N.-sponsored peace talks in Mexico City.

It was hailed by the United Nations and the United States as a major step toward reaching a final cease-fire in El Salvador’s 11-year civil war that has claimed about 75,000 lives.

In Mexico City, the latest round of peace talks went into recess with no new accords. The talks were to resume after consultations, delegates said.

Rebel leaders said they had no reports of clashes since the truce took effect.
