Mike Campbell’s new Andrews 70 Victoria, launched only a week earlier, led the pack chasing Friday’s starters after the first day of the Long Beach Yacht Club’s race to Cabo San Lucas.

Light winds plagued the 23-boat fleet, but Victoria averaged 7.9 knots and covered 153 miles in closing on eight smaller boats that had a day’s head start. Carl Eichenlaub’s 45-foot Cadenza was setting the pace, 602 miles from Cabo and 60 miles ahead of Victoria.
