Wine Brokers Get Prison Terms: Two San Joaquin Valley wine brokers convicted of mislabeling cheap wine grapes as premium varieties were sentenced to federal prison terms. U.S. District Judge Edward Garcia sentenced Nick Bavaro, 35, of Escalon, to 21 months in prison, and Bavaro’s brother, Frank, 30, also of Escalon, to 15 months. The Bavaros, who were partners in a grape harvesting and brokerage business, were indicted last year on four felony counts of misrepresenting at least 6,500 tons of Thompson and other low-priced wine grapes as Zinfandel, Chardonnay or Sauvignon blanc grapes.
