A Mom’s Devotion to Healing Her Child

Share

I was deeply moved by John M. Glionna’s story of Jimmy Nute (“Learning to Live,” Nov. 14). Having spent much of my childhood in hospitals, I empathize with Jimmy’s pain, and the misunderstanding of his peers.

My scars pale in comparison to those of a burn victim, and I was inspired by Jimmy’s courage, resilience and even humor about his appearance. Some credit for this must go to his mother, Sherry Fontaine. I would never have made it through my experiences without the love and support of my mother, and Sherry’s devotion to her son cannot be overlooked, even if it cost her her marriage.

What a shame that both kids and adults are so quick to judge by what they see on the outside, therefore missing what’s on the inside--a brave, tough, smart boy who’s been through more than most of us can imagine.
