CITY COUNCIL

LOAN: Approved a $700,000 loan to A Community of Friends, a nonprofit organization, to buy and renovate a 24-unit apartment building for the mentally disabled at 235 S. Berendo St. The complex is for low-income tenants.

WALK OF FAME: Approved placing the name of legendary rock ‘n’ roll disc jockey Alan Freed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Dec. 10 at 6381 Hollywood Blvd.

REPAIRS: Approved spending $122,287 in Community Development Department funds to make repairs to the Ivar Theater in Hollywood.

STREET CLOSED: Councilman Nate Holden has introduced a proposal requesting the temporary closure of Stearns Drive between Pico and Olympic boulevards Dec. 6 from 7 p.m. to midnight for a celebration of Hanukkah.

HISTORICAL RECORDS: Approved accepting the donation of records from former Mayor Sam Yorty. Yorty, who was mayor from 1961 to 1973, donated the records to the city archives.

The donations include photographs of Yorty, newspaper clippings, and plaques and awards. Passed: 10-0. Voting yes: Marvin Braude, John Ferraro, Ruth Galanter, Nate Holden, Joel Wachs and Michael Woo. Zev Yaroslavsky was absent.

TAXI DISCOUNT: Approved an ordinance that allows city franchise taxi cab companies to give a 15% discount to employees of businesses that participate in the city’s Guaranteed Ride Home Program. The discount is provided to employees who must leave work due to an emergency or are working late and cannot use a car-pool vehicle or public transportation. The city will also pay 50% of any emergency taxicab ride home for one year for an employee of a company that starts a program. The mayor must give final approval. Passed: 13-0. Voting yes: Braude, Ferraro, Galanter, Holden, Wachs and Yaroslavsky. Woo was absent.

HATE CRIMES: Approved an ordinance that establishes a special fund to be used by the Los Angeles Police Department in investigations of hate crimes. The amount cannot exceed $500 for each hate crime incident. These type of incidents include acts directed at people because of their race, religion or sexual orientation. Passed: 12-0. Voting yes: Braude, Ferraro, Galanter, Holden, Wachs and Yaroslavsky. Woo was absent.
