SIMI VALLEY : Soup’s On Thanks to Campbell Donation

Share

A Simi Valley resident recently told Willa Dobbs, the organizer of a nonprofit food bank called Care and Share, that his company would like to donate some soup. But Dobbs said she had no idea how much.

Dennis McLoone’s employer, Campbell Soup Co., on Monday delivered 3,000 cases of instant noodle soup mix to the food bank, Dobbs said. Each case contains 24 packages of soup.

“It’s the largest contribution,” said Dobbs, who founded Care and Share 22 years ago. “I had no concept of what I was in for when I said I would take it.”

McLoone is on vacation and could not be reached for comment.

Dobbs said her group plans to share the large supply of soup with other food banks in Thousand Oaks and Moorpark.

She said Care and Share is serving an average of 350 to 400 families a month, compared to about 200 last year. She blamed the recession for the increase.

Most contributions to the food pantry come from food drives, she said.

Dobbs said Care and Share gave away more than 220 turkeys for Thanksgiving. On Tuesday night, she said, someone broke into the food pantry’s storage facility at the Church of the Nazarene on Royal Avenue and stole six turkeys and a ham.

Police are investigating the break-in.
