La Canada Flintridge : Rose Garden Name Picked

Descanso’s International Rosarium will be the name of the new five-acre rose garden complex at Descanso Gardens.

The gardens held a contest to select the name. Six of the 560 entries suggested rosarium , a Latin word meaning rose garden.

Winners of $100 prizes were: Sabrina K. Peukert, Montrose; Joyce Jackels, Northridge; Louise Mellon, Oxnard; Georgia Robertson, Woodland Hills; Torri McEntire, Temple City, and Phillip Neuhauser, Sunland. Jeannie Pero of Sunland won honorable mention for her entry, Via de las Rosas.

Construction of the garden will begin early next year. When completed in 1993, it will feature 4,000 rose bushes from around the world surrounded by other plants, trees and shrubs.
