State education officials describe Maria Azucena Vigil as a “teriffic teacher” who is on the front line of bilingual education. Vigil, the mother of seven, decided to return to school at age 30 and earned a degree at UC Irvine in 1971. Last month, Vigil, a kindergarten teacher at Las Lomas Elementary School in La Habra, was honored as 1992 California Teacher of the Year. Her work in the classroom “never feels like a job,” said Vigil, 56, who is known as la maestra (teacher) to her children. In accepting the award, Vigil hailed the “thousands of outstanding teachers who work diligently every instructional day” to serve the state’s 5 million students.

* After making prepared remarks, President Bush said recently he would yield to a question from “The Legend.” Amid laughter, Pete Moraga asked, “Could you make it ‘Living Legend’?” Moraga, 65, has been in broadcasting for four decades, most recently as a reporter for KNX radio. Moraga studied advertising at the University of Arizona, but during a visit to the NBC radio studios in Hollywood he got “the radio bug.” Moraga worked at a Phoenix radio station, and later at the Voice of America and U.S. embassies in Mexico City and Lima, Peru. Of his varied positions in Los Angeles media, Moraga said his work with KMEX-TV stands out. “Nothing has as much impact as commentary,” he said. “Hispanics need to hear about social and political issues.”
