Many AIDS Patients Didn’t Know Risks

In “A Triumph of Love” (Nov. 28), Bettijane Levine says, “They are among the unluckiest. They have gambled and lost” in reference to people with AIDS.

PWAs didn’t “gamble.” In order to gamble you must know that you’re taking a risk. The vast majority of PWAs had no idea that they were taking a risk at the time they contracted the virus.

Your phrasing implies an innocent versus guilty side to the AIDS epidemic and that is terribly wrong.
