PREP ROUNDUP : Huntington Beach Claims Tournament in Overtime

Huntington Beach guards Bryan Chang and Tommy Walden turned it up a notch late in the fourth quarter and overtime to lead the Oilers to a 58-57 victory over Newport Harbor for the championship of the Pilot Tipoff Classic boys’ basketball tournament Saturday night at Corona del Mar High School.

Newport Harbor (4-1) led with 1:05 left in regulation on sophomore Eric Vallely’s three-point basket, but Walden tied it at 51-51 with 49 seconds remaining. The Sailors set up a last shot by Justin McIntee, but he missed the drive with four seconds left. Huntington Beach’s Tony Gonzalez was fouled on the rebound, but he missed the front end of the one-and-one.

Huntington Beach (4-0) scored the first five points in the overtime. Walden hit a basket with 1:30, and Chang drove for a layup with 54 seconds left. Chang’s free throw with 37 seconds remaining gave the Oilers a 56-51 lead. Vallely’s fourth three-point basket shaved it to 56-54, but Chang drove for another basket with five seconds left for a 58-54 lead.

McIntee led all scorers with 25 points and eight rebounds. Chang scored 16, and Walden had 14 to lead the Oilers.
