A collection of 89 prints by Rembrandt owned by a German aristocratic family sold separately Tuesday for a total of $2.9 million, Christie’s auction house said.

Sixty-five prints by other artists of the 17th and 18th centuries in the collection brought the sale total to $3.7 million, twice the pre-sale estimate.

The sellers were anonymous. The prints were collected between 1850 and 1900 and contained some of the rarest and most admired work of Rembrandt, the Dutch artist who died in 1669, alone and in poverty.
