Israelis, Arabs Stymied; More Talks Scheduled
Israeli and Arab negotiators registered faint progress Thursday in Mideast peace talks, and all sides agreed to a second week of meetings.
“Cautiously optimistic” was how Israel’s chief spokesman, Benjamin Netanyahu, summed up his country’s views of the first round of talks, which began Tuesday.
But after seven hours of meetings Thursday, the Israelis, Jordanians and Palestinians were still unable to achieve a breakthrough. They scheduled more talks for Sunday or Monday on Palestinians’ demands that they negotiate independently rather than as part of a joint delegation with Jordan.
