Maoist Rebels Call for Peace Talks in Assam

NEW DELHI —
Maoist rebels fighting for independence in the northeastern state of Assam halted their campaign Friday and sought peace talks with the government, an Indian minister said.
The rebels have been fighting for independence in Assam, an oil- and tea-producing region near the border with China, for four years.
