Dan Jansen fought gusts of 45 m.p.h. to win the 500 meters during the U.S. Olympic Speed Skating Trials in Milwaukee.

Nick Thometz won the 1,000 meters during the second day of two weekends of tryouts. More trials were scheduled for today; qualifiers for the U.S. team will be announced after next weekend’s trials.

Jansen won the 500 in 37.05 seconds after trials were delayed for an hour because of the wind.

Thometz won the 1,000 in 1:17.50 and was second in the 500 in 37.49. Bonnie Blair, the defending Olympic champion, won the women’s 500 meters in 41.04 and the 1,000 in 1:25.14.
