Why Did Homeless Woman Quit Job?

Share

While reading “A Hell on Wheels” (Nov. 28) I felt genuine sympathy toward the writer until I reached the point where she quit her job, her only reason being that her employers reneged on their promise of rapid advancement. She does not state that her work was difficult or her managers unpleasant, just that promotion was not forthcoming (and admits that this was due to a change in company ownership).

Does she not realize that if every worker left their place of employment for this reason the work force would be reduced, conservatively speaking, by 75%?

If the ordeal of sleeping in her car and barely having enough to eat several days per month was not sufficient incentive for this woman to retain her employment, what possibly could be?

It would seem reasonable to me that a steady paycheck (albeit a small one) would be vastly preferable to shampooing one’s hair in a public washroom. I do not mean to be harsh and I am not saying that she “asked for it,” but her reason for leaving her job was no reason at all.
