The jury in Manhattan’s State Supreme Court began deliberations in the murder trial of a Muslim man charged in the assassination of militant Rabbi Meir Kahane. El Sayyid Nosair, 36, an Egyptian-born immigrant who lived in Cliffside Park, N.J., is charged with firing a bullet through Kahane’s neck after the former member of Israel’s parliament delivered a lecture on Nov. 5, 1990. In addition to killing Kahane, founder of the militant Jewish Defense League, Nosair was accused of shooting two men while attempting to escape and commandeering a cab with a gun to the driver’s head. If convicted, Nosair could receive a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
