Sticking to Your Guns About Toys
I would be interested in seeing an entire article devoted to the issue of violent toys and gunplay, which was referred in the article “Those Toys From Hell” (Dec. 11). The parents in your article, as well as Dr. Benjamin Spock, didn’t “have the nerve to take it away” when their children received gifts of guns.
Children need their parents to be an example by standing with the courage of their convictions. If you don’t want your children to play with toy guns, uphold that conviction when gifts are given. Be a strong enough parent to weather the storm of discontent. Show your children it is important to be able to abide by principles. That example will serve them well when they are faced with their own moral dilemmas as they come of age.
