Arizona Gov. Fife Symington said the U.S. government was using “Gestapo tactics” when it charged this week that he had behaved improperly while serving as a director of a failed savings and loan institution. Symington said the U.S. civil suit charging him with improper and negligent financial dealings was “a baseless political smear.” The governor denied any wrongdoing during his tenure on Southwest Savings & Loan’s board of directors from 1972 to 1984. The thrift’s failure could cost taxpayers $941 million.
