London Subway Firebombed
Two firebombs exploded on subway trains in north London on Monday, and a search for other incendiary devices closed the system for more than three hours, a week after an IRA railway blast severely disrupted commuter travel.
No injuries were reported from the two explosions or a third pocket-sized bomb found smoldering in a subway car.
The Irish Republican Army, which claimed responsibility for last week’s incident and was suspected of Monday’s bombs, announced a cease-fire hours later for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the Boxing Day holiday Dec. 26.
The Ulster Volunteer Force, an outlawed, pro-British group based in Northern Ireland’s Protestant community, said it will not call a cease-fire.
The explosions forced tens of thousands of people who normally use the subway system to find other ways to get to work Monday.
