Hitachi to Resell IBM PCs in Japan: IBM Corp., which hopes to dramatically expand a fledgling effort to supply products to other manufacturers for resale, agreed to sell notebook-size personal computers to Hitachi Ltd. for resale by Hitachi in Japan. Hitachi will reportedly buy at least 2,000 IBM notebook PCs a month--about 10% of IBM Japan’s sales of notebook computers. IBM, which announced a broad decentralization plan last month, has said it hopes to boost its original equipment manufacturing business to $3 billion a year by 1993. The company already supplies disk drives, limited quantities of computer chips and other products to third parties for resale, and the deal with Hitachi is believed to be the first involving PCs.
