Almost a quarter of Latvians want to be given an assault rifle for New Year’s, Tass news agency said Sunday.

Tass, quoting a poll taken by the Latvian newspaper Diena, reported that more than 40% of the 3,000 people surveyed said they wanted to find a good book under the tree at New Year, the main holiday in the newly independent Baltic state.

“But almost every fourth respondent would prefer to find a Kalashnikov assault rifle there. These people apparently do not have a lot of faith in the guardians of law and order,” Tass said.
