IRVINE : UC Irvine Minority Program Plans Tour

Share

The UC Irvine School of Engineering is inviting Latino, black and American Indian high school and college students to tour its facilities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday and discuss with professors and potential employers careers in engineering.

The open house is being conducted by the School of Engineering’s Minority Engineering Program (MEP), the goal of which is to increase the enrollment, retention, professional development and graduation of underrepresented students.

Black, Latino and Native American students are being targeted for recruitment because there historically have been few engineering graduates from those ethnic groups, officials said.

The MEP program is affiliated with MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement), a statewide program targeted at middle and high school students and designed to increase the number of minorities studying those subjects.

At next week’s tour, corporate representatives, faculty and staff will be available to discuss the program’s goals and upcoming activities. Corporations sponsoring the event include McDonnell Douglas, Southern California Gas, Pacific Bell, Southern California Edison and the Aerospace Corp.
