From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Some of the 30 worshipers who died during a vigil in a country church took the dizzying effects of fatal gas as a sign from God, survivors were quoted as saying. The three men who left the service early said lightheadedness from gas fumes was common during prayers at the Mount of Olives Church in the village of El Charquillo, according to the San Luis Potosi daily Pulso. At previous Pentecostal services, “The pastor told us that what we felt was nothing bad, but a manifestation of Christ,” Juan Flores Valdez told the Mexico City daily La Jornada. The victims were discovered Monday morning at the little church 50 miles north of San Luis Potosi, the state capital.
