Steve Konowalchuk and Chris Ferraro each scored two goals as the United States defeated Canada for the first time in 10 years, 5-3, and moved into a tie for first place in the World Junior Championships at Fussen, Germany.

The United States improved its record to 4-1-0 to pull even with the Commonwealth of Independent States, formerly the Soviet Union, which lost to Czechoslovakia, 5-2. The Americans play CIS today and face Czechoslovakia Saturday. Sweden (3-1-1) took over third place by beating Switzerland, 4-3.
