Clean Beaches

Your editorial “Adopt a Beach or Park” (Dec. 24) makes a valid point to encourage users to pick up their own trash.

I have observed the maintenance program at Will Rogers Beach for many years and feel expenses can definitely be reduced in the winter months. It is ridiculous to me for our beaches to be raked on almost a daily basis. Many days, indeed weeks, the only users are a few sea gulls, yet the large diesel tractors roam up and down the beach, churning the sand. This practice is non-productive and contributes to wind-driven erosion.

Let’s rake the beaches only once a week in winter months and give them a rest. The labor, fuel, and maintenance expense could be used more effectively in other areas.
