MOORPARK : Library May Get Prefab Additions

The Moorpark Library may be expanded to more than 1 1/2 times its present size under a plan being discussed by city and county officials, the director of the Ventura County Library Services Agency said Friday.

As many as five prefabricated rooms may be built onto the library, adding as much as 2,900 square feet to the 5,000-square-foot facility, said Dixie Adeniran, the county’s chief librarian.

The proposed addition was discussed Thursday night by Adeniran, Ventura County Supervisor Vicky Howard, Mayor Paul W. Lawrason Jr. and other city and county officials.

The facility now has about 30,000 volumes, not enough for a city with Moorpark’s population of about 25,000, Adeniran said.

Concern over the Moorpark Library’s size has increased since the Thousand Oaks Library began charging an annual $55 library card fee to users who do not live in Thousand Oaks. Since the fee went into effect Oct. 1, many of the 7,000 Moorpark residents who used the Thousand Oaks Library have begun borrowing books from the Moorpark facility, librarians said.

Officials began considering expansion because prospects appear dim for the city to get a new library in the next few years, Adeniran said. A $300-million state bond issue for libraries, which could lead to a new facility for Moorpark, has been proposed for the November, 1992, ballot.
