Japan Studying 219-M.P.H. Train

A Japanese institute plans to develop a low-noise superexpress train that can travel as fast as 219 m.p.h., Kyodo News Service reported Friday.

Kyodo, quoting anonymous officials at the Railway Technical Research Institute, said the project aims to wrest the speed record from France’s Train a Grande Vitesse. TGV is the world’s fastest operating train, with a maximum speed of 188 m.p.h., it said.
