Boris Yeltsin and Russia
To answer the question “Yeltsin Mystery: True Democrat or Tyrant?” (Dec. 27), I would like to suggest to trust the judgment of the White House: When Gorbachev asked for support he was left dangling, but when Yeltsin asked for it he was accommodated. For a republic transformed into an empire, dictators are easier to deal with. And in the case of Yeltsin there is the added prospect that within a year or two Russia can once again be called an enemy to justify a strong defense industry.
Happy New Year!
