Tomba Wins Slalom in Yugoslavia

Italy’s Alberto Tomba flashed down the icy Podkoren slalom course at Kranjska Gora, Yugoslavia, to his 24th World Cup ski victory Sunday, beating runner-up Armin Bittner of Germany by nearly two seconds.

Tomba was upset Saturday by unheralded countryman Sergio Bergamelli in a giant slalom race. Bergamelli did not compete Sunday, when Tomba covered the two runs in 1 minute 40.84 seconds. He was fastest in both runs.

Bittner, seeking his first victory this season, was timed in 1:42.78.

It was the fifth victory of the season for Tomba and strengthened his lead in the overall World Cup standings. Tomba has 800 points to 675 for runner-up Paul Accola of Switzerland.
