Australia OKs Offshore Oil Drilling: The Australian government has given the country’s biggest company the go-ahead to explore what could be its most significant oil find, despite protests by environmentalists. Canberra has approved an application by Broken Hill Pty. Co. for more offshore exploration drilling in the Otway Basin about 125 miles southwest of Melbourne, Resources Minister Alan Griffiths said. Griffiths rejected criticism by the environmentalist movement Greenpeace that the drilling, which BHP plans to start midyear, would harm the Southern right whale that breeds in the area.
