U.S. Loses Ground in Chip Market: American companies’ share of the worldwide computer chip market declined in 1991, according to preliminary figures from the market research firm Dataquest. The report dashes hopes that an increase in U.S. market share in 1990 signaled the end of a long slide in the domestic chip business. Japanese companies garnered 49.6% of worldwide chip sales last year, up from 48.7% in 1990, while U.S. companies’ share slipped to 35.9% from 36.5%. Intel surpassed Motorola to become the largest U.S. chip vendor, according to Dataquest, while NEC, Toshiba and Hitachi retained the top three spots in the global rankings.
