4 Chinese Executed for Selling Women
Four leaders of a gang that abducted and sold more than 60 women have been executed, an official report said Monday.
Twelve other gang members were sentenced to prison terms ranging up to life, the China Women’s News reported.
Kidnaping and trafficking in women has become a major problem in recent years. In most cases, young girls from the countryside are tricked into leaving their villages with promises of jobs in the cities. Many are taken far from their homes and sold into marriage.
In the latest example, the gang, which operated for 2 1/2 years in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, earned more than $18,500 from the sale of at least 60 women, the report said. Eighteen of the women have been found and returned home.
