FOND RETURN: Judge Robert Gardner, 80, above, who comes out of retirement for occasional assignments, knew it would be nostalgic to return to the Old County Courthouse in Santa Ana (B1), where he heard his first case 45 years ago. When overcrowding led Superior Court to send him to the renovated building Monday for its first trial in 24 years, he invited his clerk from those days, Lecil Slayback, now 79, to share the moment.
