Mask: The Alabama governor had a tough public image, but his rigid sneer may have hidden another aspect of his personality. One of George Wallace’s closest operatives in the 1960s says the former governor and presidential candidate was a womanizer whose powerful political machine was corrupt. Seymore Trammell claims in a forthcoming book that Wallace engaged in “a lot of cheap sex with women all over the country.” Wallace’s son, state Treasurer George Wallace Jr., said the account is full of lies.

Cut: She slashed a party guest with a champagne glass, authorities said. So late last week Ratna Sari Dewi Sukarno, 51, the widow of Indonesia’s first president, was arrested at a posh lodge in Aspen, Colo., and is facing a charge of second-degree assault. Victoria M. Osmena, 43, of New York City, was released from a hospital with 37 stitches in her face. Authorities didn’t know what set off the altercation.

Jinx: What a birthday. King Juan Carlos of Spain turned 54 on Sunday in a hospital, recovering from knee surgery after a skiing accident. The monarch was injured last month when an out-of-control skier knocked him down while the royal family was on their annual holiday in a Spanish resort. The king’s surgery was successful, but it may be the last time he spends the holidays on skis: Carlos also celebrated his 45th birthday in a hospital . . . after a ski mishap.

Fun: Mildred Lambert is having a ball after 78 years. Mildred was just 8 and living in Smith Center, Kan., when her relatives started renovating their home. The little girl was playing with a beloved red, blue and yellow ball when it disappeared into a crack in the floor. Lambert was distraught. “Playthings were . . . hard to come by,” she says. Many years later, the house was to be razed, and Lambert’s daughter asked the owner to look for the long-lost toy. And last month, about 60 relatives presented Lambert with a little gift. She beamed: “I’ve had some nice ones, but that one’s a treasure.”
