SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Glendale Board of Education members are considering a plan to streamline the school district’s data processing operations by replacing some employees with a $1.5-million computer system.

If the board decides to revamp the system, as many as five of the 12 employees in the data processing department could lose their jobs. A decision on the new system is expected in March.

Titan Education Services, the consulting firm that prepared the study, estimates that the district could save as much as $38,000 with the new system over the next five years. But during its first two years, the School Administrative Student Information System, as it is called, will cost the district $117,000 more than the current system, officials said.

“If we can really improve our services, the board may wish to look at other areas to cut the budget” and pursue the new system, schools Supt. Robert Sanchis said. The $105.7-million school district budget for 1991-92 already includes three layoffs in other departments. In addition, 19 vacant positions, mostly in the clerical and maintenance areas, remain unfilled.
